A viral wellness trend is drawing attention to an unsafe comparison: whether raw animal milk is essentially the same as human breast milk because neither is necessarily pasteurized before an infant consumes it.
Experts say that comparison misses several important differences between the two. Human breast milk is biologically designed for human infants, while raw milk from animals can carry harmful pathogens and does not provide the nutritional profile babies need.
Major medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association, do not recommend raw milk consumption because of the risk of foodborne illness.

Breast milk and raw animal milk are fundamentally different
Human milk is specifically adapted to the nutritional and developmental needs of human babies. Cow’s milk and other animal milks are designed for their respective species and have substantially different amounts of protein, minerals, fats and other nutrients.
Human milk also contains a complex combination of immune factors, hormones, enzymes and other bioactive components that support infant development.
Raw cow’s milk does not replicate those properties. It is therefore not an alternative to breast milk or infant formula for babies.
The way milk is collected matters

Raw milk outbreaks have repeatedly demonstrated the potential danger. Children and teenagers have represented a substantial share of cases in some documented outbreaks, reinforcing why health authorities recommend avoiding unpasteurized milk.
Breastfeeding parents should avoid raw milk, too
The safety concern does not disappear simply because an adult is breastfeeding rather than giving raw milk directly to a baby.
A breastfeeding parent who becomes seriously ill after consuming contaminated milk may have difficulty caring for their infant or maintaining normal feeding routines. Certain infections can also create additional concerns involving close contact between a sick parent and a vulnerable baby.
For breastfeeding parents, avoiding raw milk is therefore a straightforward way to reduce an unnecessary source of foodborne illness.
Why pasteurization still matters
The argument that breast milk is consumed without pasteurization overlooks the fact that human milk and raw animal milk are biologically and nutritionally different products.
