An estimated 1 billion people worldwide are living with vitamin D levels too low to support normal biological function, and most have no idea it’s happening. The deficiency rarely announces itself with a single dramatic symptom, which is why it quietly wears down immune function, mood, bone density and energy for months while most people blame stress, aging or bad sleep instead.
Why summer sun isn’t the fix everyone assumes it is
A Newcastle University study published in June 2026 tracked nearly 300 people across northern Britain and found that summer sunlight failed to meaningfully raise vitamin D levels in the groups most at risk, including adults over 65 and people with darker skin tones. More than half the older adults in the study still tested insufficient, and the rate was even higher among participants from minoritized ethnic backgrounds. That finding challenges a common assumption that a sunny season alone resets the problem, and it reinforces why testing matters more than guessing based on the calendar.
1. Fatigue that sleep does not fix
Low vitamin D makes cellular energy production less efficient across multiple tissues, including muscle. The resulting fatigue feels different from ordinary tiredness because it shows up regardless of how much rest a person gets. A serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D blood test gives a definitive number instead of leaving the guesswork to how someone feels on a given day.
2. Bone pain or diffuse muscle aching without an injury
Vitamin D drives calcium absorption and bone mineralization, and when levels drop, the skeleton starts losing structural support, producing a dull ache in the lower back, hips, shins or ribs. Diffuse muscle aching with no clear cause is a related warning sign, especially for people with limited sun exposure or those living at higher latitudes through winter.
3. Low mood or a persistent drop in motivation
Vitamin D receptors sit in brain regions tied to mood regulation, and lower serum levels are linked to higher rates of depressive symptoms across multiple studies, partly through the vitamin’s role in serotonin production. This doesn’t make supplementation a standalone treatment for depression, but a deficiency can worsen a mood state that isn’t responding to other interventions.
4. Frequent illness that lingers longer than it should
Vitamin D helps regulate both the innate and adaptive immune response to respiratory pathogens. People running consistently low levels tend to catch more colds and take longer to recover from them than people with comparable exposure.
5. Noticeable hair thinning or increased shedding
Vitamin D plays a role in the hair follicle cycle, and deficiency has been tied to diffuse hair thinning where more follicles than normal enter their resting phase at once. It gets blamed on stress or genetics almost every time before anyone checks the vitamin.
A newer symptom researchers are still connecting
A study published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in February 2026 found adults with vitamin D deficiency carried a 28.6% higher risk of developing dry eye disease, based on health records from millions of patients. It’s an early finding, but it adds one more reason to treat unexplained physical symptoms as a reason to test rather than dismiss.
How much vitamin D you actually need each day
The National Institutes of Health recommends 600 IU daily for adults 19 to 70 and 800 IU for those over 70, though many endocrinologists consider 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily more appropriate for adults with limited sun exposure. The upper tolerable limit is 4,000 IU. Most researchers now aim for a blood level between 40 and 60 nanograms per milliliter rather than simply clearing the deficiency threshold of 20 nanograms per milliliter. Fatty fish, egg yolks and fortified dairy or plant milk help, but they rarely close the gap alone once someone is already deficient.
