Creatine has long lived in the world of gym bags and protein shakes, prized mostly for muscle growth and workout recovery. A new study out of UCLA suggests it might also have a place in cancer treatment, by giving a boost to the immune system’s tumor fighting cells.
The research, published in the journal iScience, centers on dendritic cells, a type of immune cell responsible for spotting tumors and activating killer T cells, the immune system’s primary weapon against cancer. According to the study’s senior author, the dietary supplement appears to do more than support the T cells themselves. It seems to energize the broader network of cells that prepare and guide them into action.
How Researchers Found the Creatine Connection
The team began by comparing dendritic cells that had infiltrated tumors in mice against dendritic cells from healthy tissue. Tumor infiltrating dendritic cells showed higher levels of a protein responsible for transporting creatine into cells. That finding pointed researchers toward a deeper look at how creatine availability affects dendritic cell performance.
When dendritic cells lacked the ability to transport creatine, they were less active and survived for shorter periods, weakening their ability to prepare T cells for an immune response. When researchers supplied creatine directly to dendritic cells, the opposite happened. The cells’ energy levels rose, and they became noticeably more responsive to tumor cells.
In mice, daily creatine injections slowed tumor growth and increased both the number and the activity level of dendritic cells moving into tumors, suggesting a more robust overall immune response.
What It Could Mean for Cancer Vaccines
Researchers also tested creatine’s effects on human dendritic cells in lab settings, and found a similar pattern. The dietary supplement strengthened these cells’ ability to activate T cells against cancer related targets, a finding that could matter for the development of dendritic cell based cancer vaccines.
A graduate student who worked on the study described two potential paths forward. Creatine could serve as a supplement to enhance immune response in patients already undergoing immunotherapy, or as a tool used earlier, to strengthen dendritic cell based vaccines before they are given to patients.
Caution Ahead of Any Real World Use
Despite the encouraging findings, researchers were careful to frame creatine as a potential complement to existing treatment rather than a standalone cancer therapy. Immunotherapy currently helps only an estimated 20% to 40% of patients, and the study’s authors say considerable research remains before anyone understands the full extent of creatine’s role in cancer care.
The researchers specifically cautioned against interpreting the results as a green light for cancer patients to start taking creatine supplements without medical guidance. The bigger scientific question, they say, is how to metabolically support dendritic cells in ways that strengthen the immune system’s overall response to tumors.
An Early but Promising Signal
The study adds creatine to a growing list of everyday nutritional compounds being reexamined for therapeutic potential beyond their original popular use. If future research holds up, creatine could eventually factor into how doctors think about supporting immunotherapy patients or designing dendritic cell vaccines. For now, the findings represent an early signal rather than a treatment recommendation, and researchers say the next steps will focus on understanding exactly how far that signal extends.
