The review, published July 31 in the journal Cell Press Blue, was led by aging biologist Dudley Lamming and colleague Bailey Knopf at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Their conclusion cuts against years of marketing and even some standard advice given to older adults.

The core finding is simple. Lower protein intake appears to switch on biological pathways tied to healthier aging and steadier metabolism. For active people building muscle, higher intake still matters. But most adults live relatively sedentary lives, and for them the extra load may carry hidden costs.

In experiments, mice with elevated FGF21 outlived their peers, with females living roughly 40% longer and males around 30% longer, a striking signal even before human trials catch up.
